Recipe Time: Gobi Manchurian/Cauliflower Manchurian

Chinese food is my favourite cuisine and to keep a balance between ordering out and eating at home I keep trying out recipes at home. A few weekends ago, I developed this sudden craving for eating veg manchurian but had limited resources at home, so the next best alternative was Gobi Manchurian, and though it was my first time that I was making it myself, it turned out great! I ran a poll on my Instagram stories where the majority was a YES for the recipe, so here it is! The recipe took hardly 30 minutes to put together and totally satiated my cravings!

Food Review Video : Nawab Saheb at the Renaissance Mumbai

This is my very first food review video of this amazing restaurant called Nawab Saheb located at the Renaissance Mumbai. It is a must-try place for old fashioned Indian cuisine dating way back in history, to the royal families of India. I tried a couple of dishes and I can't tell how mouth-watering they were.. You have to check out the video to know more! :)

I hope you liked the review enough to be tempted to head to Nawab Saheb right away! ;) I had the most amazing Dum Nalli Ka Gosht and that would be my most recommended dish to you out there!

Summer Slamming!

Summer is back with a BANG in Mumbai! I don't remember a summer this hot and this early for years. Global warming you seriously have a huge role to play in this and I wonder what is in store for us in the months ahead. Nevertheless we definitely have a few good things to look forward to, and one of them has been the launch of CafĂ© Coffee Day's ‘Summer Slam’ range of chilled smoothies and slushes. Now we all can make our own drinks at home, so why is it that these drinks are any different and that I decided to tell you about it? Well that's because these slushes and smoothies come in 3 flavours each and most of these flavours are combinations that I have never heard of. That is exactly what intrigued me to go check them out when CCD invited me for the tasting session last weekend at a fun event called the #CCDSummerSlam.

The slushes are really flavoursome and the 3 variants have tropical fruits used in abundance. The Pink Lemonade Slush made with the wonderful pink grape fruit has a nice sweet and tangy taste to it along with looking pretty. It's also my favourite out of the three slushes. The Tropical Spice Slush is a mix of jalapenos(quite unheard of in a slush) and tropical fruit granita but was very spicy for my taste and left me with a burning sensation in my throat. While I was most excited about this one before going for the tasting, it's not something that I would recommend for the faint-hearted. The Strawberry Blast Slush obviously as the name suggests, had the goodness of strawberries but it was also blended with chilled pomegranates that gave the flavour a real twist.

The smoothies have a twist too where there are bite sized pieces of ingredients in the smoothie and so you are drinking as well as enjoying the raw flavours of the fruits/dessert simultaneously. The Rasmalai Smoothie is the Indian dessert that has been converted into a rich, creamy beverage and the almond flavour is noticeably strong along with pieces of the mithai being there. I am not an Indian sweet lover, but I will surely recommend it to those who love Rasmalai. The Strawberry Pom Smoothie is once again like the slush a yummy mix of strawberry and pomegranate along with additionally being creamy, and this was my favourite from the smoothies. The Mango Peach Smoothie again for me was a unique combination of the fruit of the season - Mango and another preferred fruit of mine - Peaches, a blend that I loved.

The event was a fun afternoon with us downing shots of the various smoothies and slushes and the sugar rush was quite evident by the time the afternoon ended with the giggles and laughter that you could hear all around ;-)

Finally it was time for me to choose my favourite from all and while I was confused between the Pink Lemonade Slush and Strawberry Pom Smoothie as to which one was my absolute favourite (which let me tell you was a difficult decision to make), I finally did zero down and the winner is.....

Top - Singapore
Green Khakis - Forever 21
Gold Loafers - Pavers England
You guys must go and give these super cool drinks a try which are available at all CCD outlets across the country! Summer surely is going to be way better now! :-)

The best of Traditional Rajasthani Thalis in Jaipur

Rajasthan is a traveller's delight. Every city you go to  has something really unique to offer be it the history, the geography, the experiences along with the one common thing loved by all - Traditional Rajasthani food!

Jaipur is a part of India’s Golden Triangle and is one of the top five destinations in India in terms of tourism. It is a must go on anyone's bucket list. I have been to Jaipur twice in the last couple of years and food is the first thing on my mind when I land there. After trying and testing a couple of places for various kinds of dishes, I have zeroed down on my favourites though of course I am always open to trying out new places and dishes when I visit next.

The traditional thali in Jaipur is a must have if you are visiting and here are my favourite places which you must try out!

Chokhi Dhani
Chokhi Dhani is the perfect place for a rustic Rajasthani experience. It is set up like a village and you can experience folk dances, street shows, palmistry, shopping for handmade jewellery and artifacts before you settle for the best part of your visit which is their unlimited thali. When I had visited, I actually sat on a swing hung from the tree, spent sometime with the palmist, shopped for cute handmade jewellery, saw a folkdance and a rope walk, all before heading for my dinner which was something that I had not imagined would be so fabulous. The servers are really friendly and forever smiling and once they start feeding you, they do not stop putting food onto your plate. They urge you to eat more and top every serving with a spoon ful of desi ghee or white butter! The variety is so huge, that you don't know what to eat and what not to eat and everything is so tasty that 'Pet bhar jaaye par man na bhare' which means 'Your stomach gets full the heart doesn't agree'. The main course consists of traditional Rajasthani starters and main course dishes and once that is done, the variety of sweets too is unending. I couldn't get up after my meal because I was so full and it took me a good 10 minutes before I could finally think of making a move back to the car. It costs you INR 600 for an adult and is worth every penny.
Address: Chokhi Dhani - 5 Star Ethnic Village Resort, 12 Miles Tonk Road, Jaipur

Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar
One of the oldest in Jaipur, this place is known for its sweet shop and restaurant. It is also known as LMB. The thali menu is extensive and the varieties of dal baati churma that they serve is really good. The kadhi pakodi was delicious. My other favourites were the pyaz kachori which is fried in pure ghee and the paneer ghewar which is a speciality. The dahi wadas melt in your mouth and the chaat dishes are tasty too. The lassi is so thick that you have to suck the straw multiple times to get a sip but it is brilliant - one of the best lassis I have ever had! Located in the heart of Johari Bazaar, it is the perfect place to head to after all the wonderful shopping in the market. It costs about INR 450 inclusive of taxes for a thali.
Address: 100, Johari Bazaar, Pink City, Jaipur

Handi Restaurant
This place is a must for non-veg lovers and has an awesome non-veg thali. They serve you 3 authentic non-veg dishes in your thali along with other veg dishes. The Jaisalmeri Lal Maas is to die for and the butter chicken is really tasty. The handi meat is their specialty which is served with smoked charcoal and the Jungli chicken is another to die for dish. You must try the Afghani chicken for starters and the roomali rotis that are paper thin and just melt in your mouth. The Mutton Handi Biryani is another must have from their menu. We had ordered a thali and some a la carte dishes too and so I landed up trying quite a few dishes. Some of the non veg dishes were very spicy but really mouthwatering. I guess its the spice that makes the dish even more flavoursome. The non-veg thali costs INR 550.
Address: Maya Mansion, Opposite GPO, MI Road, Jaipur

I feel like going back to Jaipur just for this yummy food after having described it to you in such detail! Whenever you travel to Jaipur, do try out the authentic Rajasthani food in Jaipur at these places. Most people think that Rajasthani thalis are only veg, but Rajasthani non-veg thalis are quite easily available across the state which I highly recommend. If you also find a restaurant to recommend to me, do let me know so that I can check it out on my next trip to Jaipur.

Bon Appétit! :)

Mumbai's Most Romantic Places for Dessert

It officially is the month of love and there's nothing more romantic than sharing a sweet something with your sweetheart! Chocolate and vanilla anyway have been known as aphrodisiacs from ancient times and so skipping everything else and moving right onto desserts is an even more interesting proposition, isn't it? ;-) But where exactly are you going to get the best dessert options in Mumbai when you are in the mood for love is the question most of you have, and so I'm here with the best recommendations(which are my favourites too) from some of the most romantic couples I know and are foodies like me and Prateek :)

Raina says - As a couple, one of us is a jaw full of sweet teeth and the other is a savory kinda guy. A very sweet and salt combination makes us enjoy our meals to another level. Our favorite dessert off late is 'Raspberry Delice' at Yauatcha . The dessert menu there is a clear winner over the rest of the sections of the menu, and this one is the pick from the pack. It's high on chocolate and raspberry, and does super justice to the texture of the mouse. All this and the way it looks all pretty in red is totally Valentine!!  The hazelnut brownie is a standout component. We also love the macaroon there, and rate it way above most hyped places for macaroon.

Natalia says - It's pretty recent that I developed a liking for cheesecakes and it may have got passed on from Francis. So whenever it's a desert date or craving for soul food, it's got to be Moshe's, Bandra Hill road . The ambience offers just the solace we look for. While I love the baked Philadelphia cheesecake, Francis has been a blueberry cheesecake fan for all his life. The creamy texture and the tangy tingering flavour of my baked favorite is totally relishing. The city lights peeping through the glass panes is just romantic and comforting. A must try for a coffee date.

Aniruddha says - Tiramisu at CPK happens to be right on top when it comes to desserts. We simply love how they present it. It’s like a nice huge brick of awesomeness with kahlua adding taste to every bite - simply heavenly! Our next favourite is the Red Velvet cake – we love the frosting done with hand-whipped vanilla bean cream cheese.

Prerna says - We are two different sides of a coin that co-exist and I guess that's what works for us. One place where we both are happy souls is 'The Seasonal Tastes' at Westin Garden City. Their Sunday brunch is something we look forward to for their delicious dessert spread. While I like their waffle and sizzling brownie, Vikram is more of an Indian sweet fanatic and craves for their payasam and rasgullas.

Abhijit says -  We love Punjab Grill's take on the traditional phirni - it's perfectly balanced as far as sweetness goes and you get surprised by the little bits of coconut malai in the dessert which makes it yummilicious. The other surprise is the gulab jamun at with Nutella inside and that makes it all the more different and special than anywhere else.

So other than heading for a night out or to the ice-cream parlours in Mumbai, these romantic foodies also love heading to these fantastic places for a sweet time. Are any of these your favourites? I would love to know in the comments below :) If you haven't tried them then please do, cause I can vouch for these mouth-watering recommendations!

Royalty at Rivaayat - Trident BKC's Traditional Cuisine Food Festival

When I think of amazing dishes made with closely guarded recipes having mysterious ingredients, the history of the royal Khansamas comes to my mind. The grandeur with which they served the Rajas, the Nawabs and the Zamindars, and the innovative dishes they created, are memories - doors to remembrances of days different from now. I remember the Khansama in my grandmother's kitchen dishing out explosive dishes all day long, making eating an all day activity with mouth watering dishes churned out one after the other. I don't remember eating most dishes again as he came up with delectable new dishes day after day. The sense of fulfillment that such dishes provide, more or less have become things of the past now, because neither do most of us have the time to enjoy such food nor can we find or afford some of the rare ingredients.

Wow, what recollections! All back to my mind because of the Rivaayat Food Festival that I recently experienced at the Trident Hotel at BKC, Mumbai at their Indian Specialty Restaurant - Maya. Thanks to the khansamas of Rampur, Awadh, Punjab and Hyderabad sharing their expertise with the chefs at Maya, we revisited some legendary dishes of India that are made from recipes more than 200 years old. Chefs Himanil Khosla and Jeewan Singh gave us an evening that is going to stay inscribed in my mind forever. You today are going to live that experience with me!

Maya has a warm ambiance with elements of traditional gold leaf work, complemented by striking accents of red and burnished gold. Personalized name cards made us feel special right from the beginning and the format of a scroll for the menu further added to the royal appeal. It was a busy night as I don't remember seeing a single empty table. Shows how much the people of Mumbai crave for such exquisite experiences.

We started with a Kebab platter consisting of tasty hand-picked kebabs by the chefs.
  • The Rampuri Sigri Ki Seekh had the melt in your mouth effect along with the poppy seeds giving the minced lamb a lovely flavour. It's cooked in a traditional barbeque.
  • The Galouti Kebab was really soft due to all the pounding that the lamb meat goes through with clarified butter. It was aromatic and flavourful due to the spices used in making the kebab which included the special Awadhi garam masala, kebab masala, saffron, rose water and itr(edible perfume).
  • The Chapli Chicken Kebab originating from Peshawar is a flattened mince chicken kebab with just the right amount of spice to please your taste buds. It is also known as the Peshawari Kebab.
  • The chef saved the best for the last - Purani Dilli Style Fried Chicken which is originally a street food and comprises of chicken pieces marinated in a special yellow masala called Noori Masala, deep fried and served with chat masala.
The chutney to accompany these kebabs was a wonderful amalgamation of coriander with olives, and was nice and fresh with a tangy taste to it.

Then it was time for the main course. Like the starters, once more the chefs served us a great choice of dishes.
  • Awadhi Nehari - This dish is made with slow cooked lamb shanks where the meat absorbs all the yummy flavours as it gets cooked for hours over a fire. This dish has a very interesting history to it - Nehari's literal meaning is nihar muah which means the dish which is eaten early in the morning. Nehari originally used to be made with trotters or joints of animals which was considered cheap meat and was eaten by the poor people of the nawab’s kingdom as they could only afford that. Slowly and gradually the dish became so popular that the nawab himself wanted to try it but could not do so because of the reason that he was the ruler and could not eat a poor man’s meal. He asked his Khansama to prepare it and the cheap meat was replaced by lamb shanks and that is how the dish became a royal dish.  The nawab decided that he will try this dish in early hours of morning so that people would not know about it and that’s the reason it’s a breakfast dish and called nehari (nihar muah). Interesting isn't it?
  • Saag Murgh Kofta - Never before have I eaten such soft chicken koftas and the combination of it with a spinach gravy was delightful. The smell of ghee and kasuri methi added to my joy.
  • Langar wali Dal - A tasty blend of whole black urad dal and chana dal with basic spices and ghee which not only me but also the royals could not resist! It was basic yet a delicious preparation. Sometimes you don't need special ingredients to make a special dish! This dish owes its origins to the langars for the devotees at the Gurudawaras in Punjab.
  • Mahi Kaliyan - A fish curry served to the royals of Hyderabad, the gravy of this dish is made with peanuts, coriander and sesame seed. Hands down the best dish I had that night! I savoured every bite of this dish and couldn't get over how a fish dish had a gravy so flavoursome yet not overpowering.
To accompany these dishes, we were served the Khameeri roti - roti with a sweetish taste to it, Amritsari kulcha - an aloo stuffed mildly spiced kulcha and the all time favourite Makke ki roti

The finale to the main course round was brought about with the Kacche Gosht ki Biryani - a fragrant and succulent rice dish made of basmati rice, soft lamb and aromatic spices. It was a light preparation and more like the yakhni pulao made in our North Indian houses.

To accompany the biryani we were also served a Papad Platter with rolled roasted papad, methi khakra and nachni khakra. Three interesting dips were served along with the platter - a walnut and radish dip which was something that I had never heard or tasted of before, a papaya relish which was sweet and the coriander and olive chutney. Once again a wonderful combination.

The sumptuous meal was followed by three equally great deserts. Though we were full to the brim, we couldn't say NO to the sweet seduction that lay ahead. The chefs clearly know their proportions because if one is not careful with the ingredients and the blend of sweetness, then deserts tend to be just sugary without any taste of the main ingredient.
  • The Gajrela - the traditional gajar ka halwa put to rest any doubts that were there about the deserts. The sweetness was balanced and the taste of carrot was not overpowered by any other ingredient used.
  • While I was busy enjoying the halwa, PS went for the Gulathi, and did not put the spoon down till he had cleaned up the entire serving. Gulathi is a rice pudding made with clarified butter, milk and sugar and served with chandi vark(edible silver foil) and nuts. It was originally made by the ladies of the house and is a traditional recipe which is uncommon. Once again the sweetness was balanced allowing one to experience the subtle taste of all ingredients used.
  • The third desert was the Sewaiya ka Muzzafar. It was the sweetest of the three and it really provided a perfect end to the meal. It was made of cardamom flavoured vermicelli, sweetened and cooked in ghee, and then served with rabdi.

With this we lived the life of the royals for the evening, and if you want to do the same, head to Maya at the Trident BKC. I would definitely say Go For It! The chefs and the attendants will dazzle you.

The festival is on from the 13th to the 23rd of January and serves thali for lunch and an a la carte menu for dinner. I would recommend reserving a table by calling on 022 66727777 in advance.
