What A Waist! Perfect Shorts For Summer

There is a socio-economic theory - that skirt hemlines go up and down with the economy ;) In times of prosperity, skirts get shorter, such as in the 1920s and early 1930s. Then, when economic hardship sets in, the hemlines get closer to the floor again - look at the 40s and 50s. When the pendulum swings again, up come the hemlines, just like they did in the 1960s. The bottom line (if you’ll pardon the pun) is that if you notice skirts getting shorter in the fashion magazines, then invest everything you’ve got. And if they are getting lower, keep your money safely under the mattress.

So, what does all this mean when high waisted shorts come into the picture, as they are proving to be one of the hit fashion items of the summer? Should we be investing? Well, no, not really. Let’s leave all the financial stuff to the people in boring business suits. They seem to know what they’re doing don’t they? Yeah, right ;)

What it actually means is that if you want to look good this summer, you need to be investing your money in a pair or two. Classic high waisted shorts should come up over your belly button and fasten just above the top of the waist. To complete the look, you need to team them with a tight, tucked-in T-shirt, or maybe a patterned loose blouse, also tucked-in. Sensing a theme here? They look best when they are accentuating your curves, so try not to cover them with anything, as this can disrupt the natural flow of your body shape.

They provide a great summer look and are perfect for a beautiful sunny day. They show off your legs and hips and will look great at summer festivals. Even when it’s a bit muddy and you’re wearing your wellies/gum boots :)

Essentially it’s a slightly different take on the usual summer short-shorts or hot pants. But this time with a slightly retro, 1960s feel thanks to the high waist. They work in lots of materials, but denim is always a winner with summer shorts. You should also try and go for shorts with accessories. Buttons on the high waistband of the shorts look great, especially in symmetrical rows. Patterned shorts, particularly polka dots, work really well with the style too.

So forget about hemlines, let’s get those waistlines up instead. What are you waiting for? Go get them! :)
